Metal Roofing versus Asphalt Shingles
Metal roofing and asphalt shingles both come in a wide variety of colors, styles and price ranges. The thick overlapping layers of a heavy architectural style asphalt shingle can add dimensional interest and beauty to that plain old boring roof. Metal roofs are available in bold colors and unique profiles which can create an entirely different look as compared to shingles.

Determining Which Roofing Product is Right for Your Home
Roofs vary not only in size and complexity but also in pitch (steepness of the roof slope). All of these items play an important role when determining which roofing product may be right for you. We also realize that you may have a specific budget that you are working with. Our certified roofing contractors will inspect your home to evaluate how many layers of shingles are on your home now (if applicable). They will also look at the scope of the overall project, review any pre-existing conditions that you may have such as water leaks, structural issues or ice damming and then make recommendations for a long-term, cost-effective solution for your re-roofing project.

Pros and Cons of Metal Roofing and Asphalt Shingles
Snow and ice tend to slide off metal roofs easier which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on where you happen to be standing at the time. Algae and staining can sometimes be issues with asphalt shingles, however, many of the premium shingles offer various types of built-in stain guard protection for this. Metal roofs can suffer from chalking and fading as well as "oil canning" (light warping), especially when installed directly over existing shingles which we generally discourage.

Cost Differences of Metal Roofing and Asphalt Shingles
Currently the cost for metal roofing is higher than regular grade asphalt shingles. However, the price gap between metal roofing and asphalt shingles has been narrowing in recent years. As a general rule, metal roofs tend to have a longer anticipated service life and warranty period than most regular grade asphalt shingles. Some of the premium grade shingles are now offering 50-year and even lifetime warranties which can exceed the warranty period for some metal roofs.

The Different Grades of Metal Roofing and Asphalt Shingles
When comparing roofing products, please keep in mind that there are different grades of metal roofing as determined by the thickness (gauge), quality and finish of the metal. There are also many different styles and grades of shingles. The manufacturers warranty period serves as a guideline as to the maximum anticipated service life of a product.

Calculating the Total Cost of Ownership for Roofing Products
When deciding between roofing products, it's a good idea to look at the total cost of ownership (TCO). The TCO can be determined by dividing the cost of a product by the anticipated life of the product. As an example, if product A costs twice as much money as product B, but product A is expected to last twice as many years before it needs to be replaced, the TCO would be about the same for either product.

The Importance of Your Roof Assembly
Your roof assembly plays one of the most important roles in your home. It protects the structure below from the harsh outdoor elements (rain, sleet, snow, wind, etc.). Equally important, asphalt and metal roofing can also add to the aesthetics of your home and increase your homes value. Many people don't realize that your roof can contribute as much to the curb appeal of your home as the siding does. In some cases, especially with steep pitch roofs, there's actually more square footage of roofing area visible than siding.

Popular Residential Metal Roofing Styles
Our two most popular metal roof styles for residential homes are Image II and Classic Rib. Metal roofing does not split or crack and is impervious to rot and mildew. While metal roofing typically costs a little more than asphalt shingles, under certain circumstances, metal roofing can be installed over the top of existing roofs, bringing significant cost savings in tear-off labor and eliminating the cost of disposal for the old shingles. We recommend that a barrier such as foam be installed over the old shingles in this scenario.

Popular Asphalt Shingle Styles
The GAF Timberline 30 Prestique High Definition is, hands down, our most popular asphalt shingle. Our second and third most popular shingles are the GAF Timberline Lifetime Prestique High Definition and the GAF Timberline Cool Series Energy Saving Shingles.

Enhanced Warranty for GAF Asphalt Shingles
Many people don't realize that the manufacturers warranty period for shingles can be upgraded if they select a certified roofing contractor. As a Certified GAF Roofing Contractor we're able to offer the GAF Weather Stopper System Plus Extended Warranty for enhanced protection and coverage on your roof.
